14 Key Decorating Stategies | Yahoo! Shine

Got this from Yahoo! Shine which I think originally comes Sunset. I especially love the home ideas since it embodies the owners' personalities. Check it out!

Strategy No. 1: Choose pieces with meaning

When Jason and Jill Williams hired a firm to design their home, they clearly stated that the theme was "sparse."They did not intend to buy things to simply fill the house; they wanted to acquire pieces over time that had meaning, complemented their lifestyle, and reflected their personalities. While the theme was "sparse," sleek and modern wasn't their design choice. Instead, they mixed furniture styles with rustic, stained, and painted finishes. Every piece serves a purpose, and each can be used in different ways for years to come.

Strategy No. 2: Layer color and texture

The clean design of this blue and white kitchen is layered with pops of energetic color. The red drum pendant from Croft & Little illuminates the bamboo island top from Teragren.Glass-front cabinets provide a showcase for colorful pottery. The bamboo-topped table on casters tucks under the island and can roll away for use throughout the house or outside. Mixing up the chair styles adds casual appeal.

Strategy No. 3: Design for gathering

Family rooms are gathering places that should exude a relaxed style and communicate warmth and playfulness.Perhaps the most important consideration for such an active room is how to keep the space's flow while noting its separate areas. Color, furniture placement, and area rugs can help meet this goal. Here, a U-shaped seating area encourages conversation. Artifacts from family travels reflect the personalities of those who live here, while the fireplace and television anchor the space.

Strategy No. 4: Use practical items as accents

For most people, the kitchen is the hub around which family and friends revolve. It makes sense that the decor reflects the dwellers' tastes and interests.Decorative accents give any kitchen a personal touch. These include practical pieces such as rugs and furniture, decorative pots, canisters, and cookbook libraries. Here, colorful, often-used items are grouped together for a visual display on top of an antique cabinet.

Strategy No. 5: Integrate workspaces

A home office can be carved out of the smallest of spaces. Here, office essentials are easily housed in the covered storage, on the floating shelf, and in the almost-hidden drawer of the work surface.

Strategy No. 6: Carry your style outdoors

"Outdoor areas are often the last to receive design attention, but they shouldn't be," says landscape designer Matt Lemos. "Plan space for your lifestyle by incorporating ample seating, table surfaces, cushions, play areas, eating spots, and sunning areas."By carrying your design style outdoors, you can turn a patio, deck, or even a balcony into another room of the house. This sleeping porch, a feature of many Craftsman houses, is updated with contemporary styling and weatherproof drapery and upholstery fabric.

Strategy No. 7: Create flow

Common colors and materials help connect your living spaces.Display signature pieces without too much fanfare. Try using one simple but dramatic floral stem or leaf in a chunky modern glass vase. In transitional areas, brushed nickel or silver works well for frames, accessories, and fixtures.

Strategy No. 8: Find a fabric you love

For designer Jennifer Hilgardner, the right fabric is one of the best ways to enhance an interior."Find a fabric you love," she says. "Choose a signature fabric with enough design elements so you can pull out colors, coordinate textures and have lots of options for furnishings and accessories."Here, green and blue accents in the fabric even play off the foliage outside.

Strategy No. 9: Smart art display

Include tall and low elements throughout the room to keep your eye moving. As a general rule, hang framed photos and art at eye level (or a bit higher if the ceilings are high). Keep in mind eye-level may be lower in a room designed for seating. Here, a lipstick-red wall sets off black-and-white photos and a mix of collected treasures.

Strategy No. 10: Create groupings

Displays of treasured and found items give guests a glimpse into your life and remind you of your history. A key to successful display is using a common denominator such as color, material, shape, or some other theme. Create small groupings throughout the room.  And remember, less is more. Don't clutter your display by trying to showcase everything. Instead, rotate cherished items often for added interest.

Strategy No. 11: Create a grid

Use a common color scheme and a grid of frames to unite children’s drawings and other artwork for a singular display. You can add and subtract with the seasons and rearrange the grid.

Strategy No. 12: Try a unifying white

White walls provide a backdrop for the other elements of this house, and they're easy to live with for the long run.The furnishings here are equally crisp and informal. Accessories play off these neutrals.

Strategy No. 13: Dramatic backdrop

A black-and-white palette sets a dramatic and flexible backdrop for family photos and accessories. Here, a glossy chocolate-brown accent wall sets off the translucent candleholders and simple white candles. Lean multiple frames of various sizes against a wall for a casual collage effect.

Strategy No. 14: Keep it clean and flexible

Designer Francesca Harris believes in collections rather than single objects. "Collections have impact," she says. The use of mass-market frames and mats gives her the freedom to swap photos in and out, and keeps her displays from feeling too precious.

Life Is Short

It's every girl's fantasy to have her dream wedding come true. Blame it on fairy tales and movies, girls are sucker for romance. We want a fancy wedding that shouts to the whole world how amazing our love life is!!! And the start of our happily ever after is majestic! Haha!!! Well, there's nothing really wrong with that... except that nowadays...budget is tight...tighter I mean, hehe! Couples should know how to prioritize (what things to splurge or save) and what to prioritize (the wedding itself or life after the wedding which is the REAL thing). The real essence of the wedding should also be present...which I believe is to finally have the blessing of GOD of your union as a couple, as husband and wife.

So I've been fantasizing lately - which is a favorite hobby of mine, haha - that a small wedding is actually nice. Small wedding as in only close families and friends are there to witness the wedding and celebrate our love.

Patty Laurel really said it right here:

"I've always wanted to have a small wedding. And by small, I mean really small. To put it in clearer terms: Me, Patrick, The Minister, my family, his family and our tiny entourage. My dream is to have a quiet and solemn ceremony with just our close knit circle of loved ones. Pat and I are extremely friendly people, we have sooooo many friends from here and there! Each person we consider a "friend" is valuable to us and has touched us in their own unique way. But at the end of the day, we have to remember that we're only getting married once..and we'd like to do it OUR WAY. So as a couple we'd like to celebrate it quietly with only our families. We're still planning to have a fun celebration with all our wonderful friends from school, church, work, etc. maybe a few days before or after, but the actual ceremony we'd like to keep as simple and meaningful as possible. This is something Patrick and I have been praying fervently for, that people will respect our decision to keep it small on our BIG day."

A small wedding with a carefree and relax vibe...

Can it also be hilarious??? Haha!

With a touch of your personality...

And details that are truly your own

With you and the guests having FUN!

And.. the LOVE is so alive and present!

White (Love) Pad

I admire women who take charge of their own lives. Women who are never scared to pursue their dreams no matter how impossible it may seem. Women who proved people that they are actually capable of doing things for themselves. Women who remain down-to-earth and fabulous despite their very busy and successful lives J Women who know how to have fun but their values remain intact.

In our country, women usually do the things that are expected from them – be meek, submissive, and allow men to provide for you. Well, I’m not saying that it’s neither wrong nor outdated to be these three things. It’s alright to be modest but we should learn to fight in whatever we believe in. Stand up for what we deserve! It’s not right anymore to sit and wait for things to happen. We should speak up and tell our men if we want flowers on Valentine’s or if we want to be cuddled when we had a bad day (naks!)... We should speak up whenever a friend asks why we’re still single (like I have yet to find a guy who truly deserves my time) or why we’re not yet getting married (as if we’re the one who will propose to the men, right??? I think being engaged is one of the things that men should initiate in a relationship, unless you’re already going out for more than a decade, then that’s something to think about...hmmm... )..  We should speak up to colleague who belittle us..unless you yourself think that you’re worthless, then it’s really a sad thought... We should believe in ourselves and actually do things that will get us through our GOAL.. Let us grow everyday..

I think it’s also okay to mess up once in a while. What is a life without mistakes and bad decisions? What is life without getting lost and hurt? What is life without something to look back and cringe on why you made such things?!?! Haha!!! What is life without having something to laugh about in the future?!?! Just remember...that as long as the result is not that damaging...then I guess it’s totally fine! Haha...safe pa rin!

Why am I saying a lot when all I wanted to share is that I want to have my own house before settling down?!?! Lol! Isn’t it nice to have your own space that you’re free to decorate? Imagine that you can do whatever you want with it...have the wall painted in purple and hung your pictures all over it!!! Haha! You can even invite a friend and go wasted for all you care (though, drink responsibly always!) You can finally cook that French food you can hardly pronounce just because you’re already sick of eating takeouts. You can clean whenever you want because your mom is not there to remind you everyday how messy your room is. You can go home any time you want because your dad is not at home waiting for you and asking you who was the guy that brought you home.

Well, living with your parents has its perks – savings, you will never die of hunger, well-laundered and ironed clothes, safety, and having your family around. But I believe that having the opportunity to live on your own before settling down allows us to learn more. We will discover a lot of things about us and be more responsible in the process. Paying the bills is solely ours. The leak in the faucet is now our problem. Doing the groceries is now our thing. Cleaning the house is now a hobby. Living on your own may seem scary (and expensive perhaps) but I think when this is done...This is actually one of the most liberating things to do and one of the biggest achievements we can have. It’s like having a baby that we will take care of. Our labor of love.

I’m not really sure if I can realize this dream considering my financial status nowadays which I talked about here. But I really want my own space which I can proudly call mine. My own space which is my sanctuary. My space which will tell my story and will tell a part of who I am. The closest thing I got from having my own space was renting a room when I was still assigned in Ormoc for two years. But that's another story...

Anyway... JThe pictures below are grabbed from mydesignfolder. I would really love my pad painted in white but accessorized with colorful details. Even though it’s small, I wanted it neat and cozy. Can you notice that the house is filled with “love and heart” details? I like it that by adding these details in the house, you can tell the owner’s personality and it makes the house distinctive from the rest. I would love my home to be filled with unique and colourful pieces. You can do so much with a white house actually! Am I right?

How about you? What’s your house like? J
